I’m going to file this under — sounds interesting in theory, but let’s see how viable/usable this actually is in practice.

I’m all for fewer data silos, more data ownership, real data portability and less reliance on “the man” (the man in this case, basically being Google and Facebook), but I’m also quite smitten with the convenience that hosting much of my data (like this Tumblr) has provided me.

I’m also having trouble understanding the philosophical difference between entrusting some fabric of strangers to sign and encrypt your data on a commodity hosted server versus the strangers at Google, Faecebook, Tumblr or wherever on their commodity hardware?  I mean, granted, the actual portability of said data might be more accessible from an “unhosted” service, but I fail to see the real philosophical difference.
